Chocolate Gravy

If you're not from the South, you may be having the same reaction that Brandon (a Seattle native) did the first time I mentioned chocolate gravy to him: "CHOCOLATE GRAVY?!?!?" [said in complete disgust]  LOL  Well, let me assure you - it is delicious and truly a Southern breakfast item!

Growing up, my mother made breakfast for us every morning.  Even though she worked in a factory, she got up extra early - 4:30 - all week so she could make homemade buttermilk biscuits from scratch for her family.  She made biscuits every single day.  What we had with the biscuits differed from day to day...sometimes we had bacon, sometimes sausage, sometimes tenderloin...but on the weekends a lot of times we got an extra treat: chocolate gravy!

Since I've been married and out of the house for nearly twelve years, my breakfast has usually consisted of something easy: cereal, oatmeal, a bagel, etc.  I rarely have time to spend on cooking a big breakfast.  However, today I am off work and decided what better way to start my morning than with a big plate of chocolate gravy and biscuits and a hot cup of coffee.  Mmmmm!

I have to admit, the biscuits were frozen ones from Pillsbury, but they worked fine.  In fact, I enjoyed my breakfast so much that I thought I'd share my mom's recipe for chocolate gravy with my readers.  If you've got even a little bit of a sweet tooth, try it.  You'll be glad you did!

Evelyn's Chocolate Gravy

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter

Mix dry ingredients in sauce pan. Add a little water to make a paste. Add milk and heat to boiling.  Reduce heat and simmer until thickened, stirring often.  Remove from heat and stir in butter.  Serve over hot buttermilk biscuits.
